This essay demonstrates that you have a confident understanding of the language devices that underpin spoken and text based language. It also shows that you have thought thoroughly about how these forms of communication have influenced each other. You have written your ideas in clear sequence and develop a reasoned argument. The tone of your writing is assured and balanced.

To develop your work for the future:

  • Examples: while many of your ideas are supported by examples, you could extend your work tremendously by increasing both the number of examples and the complexity of them. In language analysis like this, you will find the best path to improving the sophistication of your work is to explore the language itself in as much depth as possible. Often the more advanced conclusions will flow from this
  • Focus of paragraphs. Sometimes it wasn’t entirely clear what the purpose of each paragraph was. This can be improved by writing more direct topic sentences and perhaps also including in your introduction an outline of the order you’ll deal with each of your points.
  • Developing your ideas. This one would need to be covered in the preparation phase. Some of your conclusions could have been further developed, and you have a right to being assisted to getting to these more complex conclusions through discussion and feedback with your peers and your teacher. You’re encouraged to contribute and engage in this discussion more in class as it’s here that many of your ideas will be tested and extended.
